  • The internet depends on your good will. The people who receive your email may be pissed off, if you send them:

  • LARGE emails. Especially DO NOT SEND FILES without asking first. Make sure that the file is compressed, otherwise ZIP it before sending. You do not need to zip JPG pictures. They are compressed already.
  • advertisment or other useless stuff
  • material they haven't asked for
  • hate-mail. Nobody needs that.

  • Apart from the inconvenience it is considered an offense against netiquette if you do any of the above. If you are so impolite to someone, they can ask your operator to cancel your email-account. And you wouldn't be the first one. True!

Imagine this situation, which happened to me:
I was on the road and accessing my email with a toll-call. This idiot sent me a 700kByte file without asking first, and I had to download it at a shitty computer very slowly (at 2400baud/220cps) before I was able to read my important email after his. The call cost was 1$80 per minute and it almost lastest an hour. So this useless email did cost me about $100.

How to make really small JPGs

    Briefly:

A good programme that will help do it interactively: DownLoad it or see its WebPage
HERE THE QUICK INSTRUCTIONS for this programe (do exactly as described!):
    General:
When you want to email someone a picture, or put it on a web-page ... you ought to scale it and JPG it.
Whatever software you are using make sure you can adjust the JPG compression level. It need to be tuned to the absolute minimum file-size, or in other words maximum compression.
But before you save as (filetype:) JPG, you should limit the resolution. Often 240 pixels across look very fine indeed:
this file is only 6kb !!!

First adjust the picture size to 200-500 across. The Menu command could be: resample, resize, image size or similar.
Then save as (filetype:) JPG ... and choose maximum compression. Check the resulting file-size. It should be less than 10k.

To email the picture ... in Netscape use Attachment, in other email-programmes you need to UUencode it or similar.

Here now the same instructions for DOS:
Scale your picture to 600 pixels in width and make a TARGA (24bit) or GIF (8bit) with ALCHEMY, (Shareware!), or any other cheap pixel-pusher software.

    ALCHEMY -a -X600 -+ picture.bmp    (picture.bmp is an example)
and now the important part ... compressing to get a JPG file ... to do that use CJPEG.EXE (download it! 39k)
    CJPEG -Q 24 -o picture.TGA      (or GIF)
and voilà! you have a file called picture.jpg !!!

Here is how to do it in Corel PhotoPaint:
Load the picture, scan it whatever.. at farily high resolution. Not so high that your computer takes hours to get it all in, maybe just 300dpi. Crop the picture. Pull a frame around the part of the picture you feel best, and go MASK - CROP-Image. IMAGE -- RESAMPLE: reduce the size to 1200pixels wide. EFFECTS- sharpen -sharpen 15 EFFECTS -colour - gamma 130. Make any other corrections you may need. Finally IMAGE - Resample- to 600 pixels. Now Save as type  JPG-Bitmap, adjust Quality-Factor to 100. This should make small files, and keep good quality.

If you want to work the internet via email alone... here is the trick:
    send mail to:
    bobrankin@mhv.net
    in the subject field say:
    send accmail5.txt
and leave the body empty, then you'll get a 60k text via email which tells the tricks !!!

  • If you need to anonymously blow the whistle on something or someone... the easy option is this link: Send anon email, quick via WWW Whistleblowers please!

  • Here is another version, which is more complicated (follow each step):
    send a mail to: remailer@replay.com
subject: enter your subject!     << Must have subject!
<< the first line must be empty!
::                            << second line two colons only
    Anon-Post-To: alt.astrology   << enter the newsgroup
Cutmarks: **                  << optional (see below)
<< must be one empty line here
your message goes here... it will be an anonymous
message and you can say what you otherwise can't.
    Don't abuse the system ... just don't.
    - No harrasing  - No commercials  - No illegal stuff

This here will not be posted. Because is behind the ** (see Cutmarks)
... this feature can be used to cut off your automatic signature.
Other remailers can be complicated to use, but are much safer. The above method doesn't have the highest safety. For really safe anonymous message use other machines (info below). If you have written a page which explains step by step how to use the mixmasters in Win95 ... please email me.

The interlink-bbs.com is down (had a nice "spoof address thing"). Send a mail to privacy@interlink-bbs.com to find out whether its up again. Shame! Someone abused it.

Keep your data on your Computer secret.

If you do not do this, you will be sorry when your computer got stolen, or someone spied on your data. With Win95/98 it's sooo easy thanks to the clever SCRANDISK programme.
If only all programmes would be as nice an straightforward as this one!

    Download scramdisk from http://www.scramdisk.clara.net  200k
UNZIP the original file (with Winzip) under Put Scramdisk here use C:\WINDOWS  folder !!
Restart your computer. Start Scramdisk with START - RUN - scramdisk (enter).
FILE -- Mount/Create -- "check HERE"  yes, check it!
    Filename: (unobtrusive):  c:\SWAPFILE.MEM
Size: 20mB or whatever you need, Disklabel:  MySecret
OK -- click on PICK RANDOM button, press ENTER and keep depressed until  "Enter Password" appears. Enter a 7 to 9 letter password with number, example:
baby72ok  is a good short password. Repeat Password, ENTER  OK
Now go to CONFIGURE, set Password Cache clearing:   put on CLEAR
now QUIT scramdisk completetly, yes, OK.
Now open the Windows-START-button with RIGHT-CLICK on the start-button,
    navigate to PROGRAMS --> START-UP --> and right-click into the startup-folder.
    NEW -- SHORTCUT enter:  scramdisk.exe c:\swapfile.mem    OK
Start Scramdisk, RIGHT-CLICK on the Drive-icon change Preferred Drive Letter to:  P     UPDATE  ... you are DONE!

Every now and then burn the  c:\swapfile.mem  file on a CD.

You now have a P: drive for all your personal data, and this is un-crackable except for the most powerful of agencies. Since the file swapfile.mem is COMPLETELY RANDOM data and has no identifying header, nobody can even proove that you indeed have a secret file.
