The Carter Observatory
and Planetarium in Wellington, New Zealand

Here is the "official" page

pic of the buildings and the setting

The 23 cm refractor was originally made by Th. Cooke & Sons, England, in 1860.

The Refraktor

The Planetarium used to be located in the Civic Centre of Wellington, and was moved to the present location in 1991. The picture below shows the Planetarium in its old location, where G. van Dijk was the director.

The Planetarium is always worth a trip. You just take the cable car.

The Cable Car brings you from windy downtown Wellington onto the even windier hilltop with the Planetarium and the Botanical Gardens, and a magnificent view over sprawling Wellington.

The Sundial of Human Involvement is a great concept. It shows you the time by using you as a gnomon (style) casting the shadow. You, gnomon, you know what time it is?the Sun-dial of human involvement

The inscription:
THIS SUNDIAL COMMEMORATES
THE ARRIVAL OF JOHN PLIMMER IN
WELLINGTON IN 1841 AND WAS FUNDED
BY THE PLIMMER BEQUEST TO THE CITY

STAND ON THE DATE OF THE YEAR
WITH YOUR BACK TO THE SUN AND YOUR
HANDS TOGETHER POINTED ABOVE
YOUR HEAD, YOUR SHADOW WILL TELL
LOCAL STANDARD TIME.

Temporis filia veritas.
